Nollywood Filmmaker Funke Akindele Criticizes Air Peace for Stranding Passengers at Gatwick Airport

LAGOS — Nollywood filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele expressed her frustration with Air Peace after being stranded, along with numerous other passengers, at London Gatwick Airport on Friday.

In a series of tweets on her official X account, Akindele detailed the situation that began around 6:30 a.m., claiming there was a lack of communication from the airline.

“Passengers, including elderly individuals, have been stranded since 6:30 a.m. at London Gatwick Airport with no proper communication,” she wrote. “After hours of delay, we were informed there was a bird strike and promised accommodations. However, hours later, passengers remain at baggage claim, hungry and exhausted, without their bags.”

Akindele further highlighted the struggles faced by elderly passengers and families during the ordeal, urging Air Peace to take immediate action. “Release passengers’ luggage immediately and provide the hotel you promised. Do something NOW @flyairpeace,” she added.

In response, Air Peace released a statement addressing the situation. “Dear Funke @funkeakindele, we sincerely empathize with you over this experience and apologize for any inconvenience caused to your travel plans,” the airline said. “Such delays are never intentional as we prioritize safety and operational efficiency. While we strive for on-time departures, certain factors beyond our control can sometimes cause delays.”

Less than an hour later, Akindele reiterated her concerns, stating, “Since 7 a.m. at London Gatwick Airport, and it’s almost 4 p.m. — no bags, no hotel, no proper updates. Passengers are stranded. People are tired and hungry. Release the luggage and take care of your passengers NOW.”

As of Friday evening, passengers remained at the airport, awaiting further assistance from Air Peace.
