Arrest Made Following Tainted Baby Food Incident in Austria

A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Austria in connection with the recent discovery of rat poison in baby food products, police reported.

The arrest follows a partial product recall issued last month by the Swiss company HiPP after authorities detected rat poison and an unspecified toxic additive in jars of baby food sold in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

HiPP, known as a leading brand in organic baby food, indicated that the contamination did not occur during production. The company attributed the recall to a “criminal act,” which is currently under investigation. According to HiPP, the brand was subsequently targeted by an extortionist.

Police from Burgenland, Austria’s eastern state, confirmed the arrest on Sunday. Helmut Marban, a spokesperson for the Burgenland Provincial Police Directorate, stated, “For tactical investigative reasons, we cannot provide any information about the further steps of the investigation.”

In light of the incident, authorities have advised consumers to avoid HiPP products that exhibit certain indicators: a white sticker with a red circle on the jar’s bottom, a damaged lid, a missing safety seal, or an unusual smell.

The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety has warned individuals experiencing symptoms of poisoning, such as bleeding, extreme weakness, or paleness, to seek medical advice. According to the agency, rat poison can disrupt the body’s use of vitamin K, with symptoms typically manifesting two to five days after ingestion.
