One dead, three injured as violence erupts at Lagos Trade Fair market

Violence at Lagos International Trade Fair Complex Halts Operations
LAGOS—Operations at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex have been partially suspended following a violent confrontation at the Balogun Business Association (BBA) market that resulted in one death and three injuries.
The incident occurred Sunday along the Badagry Expressway, prompting management to seal off the affected area in an effort to restore order and prevent further escalation. The clash reportedly began when a task force assigned by the management board attempted to enforce a stop-work directive on unauthorized construction within the complex. Armed individuals allegedly attacked the enforcement team, opening fire.
One member of the task force was killed during the shooting, while several others sustained gunshot injuries. Sources indicate that traders had encroached on unallocated spaces, initiating construction projects contrary to established regulations that prohibit weekend building activities without prior approval.
An eyewitness noted that the enforcement team was unaware of the assailants’ armament before approaching the site. “One of the task force members was shot dead instantly, while others were wounded,” the witness reported.
The injured have been transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Veronica Ndanusa, the Executive Director of the management board, confirmed the incident and stated that the BBA section will remain closed until those responsible for the attack are apprehended. “I ordered the closure of the BBA section to prevent further breakdown of law and order after a task force member was killed on duty,” she said, adding that police presence would be maintained until the situation is resolved.
Ndanusa emphasized that the complex is a federal facility under the supervision of the Ministry of Trade and Investment, with all traders operating under regulated lease agreements.
Alhaji Bakare, Chairman of the Trade Fair Task Force, characterized the incident as a coordinated attack, alleging that the assailants were armed with firearms. “They brought in armed men who opened fire on us. One of my team members was killed, and others were seriously injured,” he stated.
Chief Security Officer Bawa Outa confirmed that prior warnings had been issued to cease illegal construction activities before violence erupted. Security personnel, including police operatives under Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani, along with officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the military, have been deployed to restore calm and evacuate casualties.
