Communal clash in Niger: One dead, houses burnt in Munya LGA – Police

Niger State Police Confirm Fatal Communal Clash in Gambwa Village

The Niger State Police Command has reported a violent communal clash in Gambwa village, located in the Munya Local Government Area, resulting in one death and significant property damage.

According to Police Public Relations Officer Wasiu Abiodun, the incident occurred on April 30, 2026, following a distress call received around 12:30 p.m. concerning unrest in the area. Police operatives from the Gwada Division were deployed to the scene, where they found that several structures had been set ablaze by local youths, leading to the destruction of huts, houses, and various belongings.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the violence was a reprisal linked to a dispute earlier that same day around 9:30 a.m. between two individuals, 18-year-old Doza Hussaini and 25-year-old Nasiru Tukur, over a parcel of farmland near a Fulani settlement. The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, prompting Doza to call his father, 35-year-old Hussaini Turaki, for assistance.

During the ensuing conflict, Hussaini allegedly wounded Nasiru, who retaliated by attacking Hussaini’s brother, Safē Turaki, aged 45, resulting in a severe injury. Safē was transported to a clinic in Gwada but was later pronounced dead. Additional injured individuals were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The police spokesman noted that security personnel have since restored order in the area and are actively pursuing those involved in the violence. Further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
