Emiliano Martinez Signs with Chelsea After Rejecting Other Offers
LONDON — Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has officially joined Chelsea, opting for the Premier League club despite interest from other teams. The 33-year-old completed a transfer from Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge for a fee of £7.5 million.
Chelsea initially planned to rely on Robert Sanchez as their starting goalkeeper this season. However, following Sanchez’s lackluster performance in the season opener against Fulham, the club decided to change course, leading to Martinez’s acquisition.
Martinez, who moved to Aston Villa from Arsenal in a £20 million deal six years ago, had expressed a desire to leave the Midlands club throughout the summer. Villa allowed his departure after securing Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma earlier this month.
Prior to his move to Chelsea, Martinez was close to signing with Juventus. He ultimately chose Chelsea, citing a preference to work under Xabi Alonso, a former player known for his success with Liverpool and Real Madrid.
In a statement on Chelsea’s official website, Martinez expressed enthusiasm about joining the club. “I’m delighted to be at this football club. Coming to Chelsea was an easy decision for me and my family. I can’t wait to get started,” he said.
He emphasized his desire for success, stating, “I want to bring that [winning mentality] here because it’s a football club that wins titles.”
Last season, Chelsea finished in 10th place in the Premier League but is optimistic about improving under Alonso’s leadership. Martinez has signed a two-year deal with the club and is expected to take over as the starting goalkeeper, relegating Sanchez to a secondary role.
