Lagos court remands PoS operator over alleged N10m fraud

Kirikiri Correctional Centre Receives New Inmate in Fraud Case

LAGOS—The Kirikiri Correctional Centre is now housing 42-year-old Kafayat Morayo Salami, a Point of Sale (PoS) operator, who was remanded by the Yaba Magistrate’s Court following allegations of fraud involving 10 million naira.

Salami faces a four-count charge filed by the Nigeria Police Force, which includes accusations of theft, fraudulent conversion, and the receipt of suspected stolen funds. According to court documents, Salami allegedly convinced a 15-year-old girl, Peace Godwin, to bring her father’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card. It is claimed that 10 million naira was withdrawn from the related account.

The prosecution contends that Salami used her Opay account, registered under the business name Morayo Al-Bashroh Ventures, to receive and retain funds suspected to belong to Godwin Enenche, in violation of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2025. Additionally, she is accused of unlawfully stealing 10 million naira between February and April 2026 in the Ago-Okota area.

Presiding Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun set bail at 1 million naira with two sureties, but Salami was unable to meet these conditions and remains in custody.

Initially arrested by officers from the Ago-Okota Police Division, Salami has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Panti, Yaba. She has denied any wrongdoing and claims she was unlawfully detained and assaulted during the investigation.

Salami stated that the incident dates back to April 13, when Godwin allegedly came to her shop to conduct a 1 million naira transaction purportedly authorized by the girl’s mother. She claims the teenager requested a transfer of 645,000 naira into a First Bank account while also receiving 100,000 naira in cash, resulting in an outstanding balance.

Further, Salami alleged that she was taken to the police station the following day without explanation. She contended that Godwin had completed similar transactions on previous occasions, indicating their long-standing association.

During her detention, Salami alleged that police officers assaulted her, removing her hijab and pressuring her for her phone password. She claims that her PoS machine was confiscated and that records of the disputed transaction were deleted.

Additionally, Salami alleged that she was denied contact with her relatives while in custody and that investigators attempted to suppress details related to the transaction account.

In the course of the investigation, Deputy Commissioner of Police Dayo Akinbisehin reportedly ordered the officer involved in the case to present relevant account information. However, it has been reported that the Investigating Police Officer insisted on pursuing prosecution despite growing public interest in Salami’s case.
