Rivers State Police Officer Detained Following Escape of Rape Suspect

Port Harcourt, Rivers State — The Rivers State Police Command has detained an officer from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) amid allegations surrounding the escape of a suspect in a rape case.

The officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ekawhe Thomas, has also received a formal query following an initial assessment of the incident.

The suspect, identified only as Goodnews, is accused of assaulting a 16-year-old girl in Rumukwurushi, located in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Reports indicate that the suspect fled while being escorted to the crime scene by an Investigating Police Officer as part of a routine investigation.

The father of the victim, who goes by Prince, recounted that he had briefly left the scene to retrieve a hammer intended to force open the suspect’s apartment. Upon his return, he was informed by the Investigating Officer that Goodnews had escaped.

“I was shocked when I came back and found out the suspect had fled,” Prince said, adding that he attempted to pursue the suspect but was unsuccessful.

In a statement released Friday, the police command’s spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, announced that efforts are ongoing to recapture the suspect. A thorough investigation has also been initiated to ensure justice is served in the case.

Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju expressed his dissatisfaction with the incident, reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and accountability. He emphasized that any officer found responsible for misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary actions in accordance with police regulations.

“The Command assures the public of its dedication to transparency, justice, and the protection of citizens’ rights at all times,” Adepoju stated.
