Insecurity: Involving US will attract foreign terror groups to Nigeria – Sheikh Gumi

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi Warns Against U.S. Involvement in Nigeria’s Anti-Terror Efforts

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has cautioned against the potential involvement of the United States in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, suggesting that such engagement could attract international terror groups to the country.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Gumi emphasized that Nigeria’s sovereignty is a “red line.” He asserted that the Nigerian military possesses the capability to address security issues if operations are conducted without “prejudices and deception.”

The cleric rejected claims that the military has been hindered in its operations against bandits and Boko Haram insurgents due to amnesty initiatives, labeling these assertions as “false and malicious.” He noted that Boko Haram has remained active for nearly 17 years following the extrajudicial killing of its founder, Mohammed Yusuf, in 2009.

Gumi further suggested that the failure of military strategies to resolve security concerns is linked to alleged excesses by security forces and the deaths of innocent civilians. He warned that U.S. involvement in Nigeria’s security operations could lead to increased violence.

“The military can handle the situation if the rules of engagement are free from prejudices and deception, both in the application of force and finances,” Gumi stated. He concluded, “The involvement of the USA will only attract international terror groups to the ‘new arena,’ exposing Nigeria to an unnecessary increase in violence.”
