Zamfara State High Court Sentences Two Men to Death for Murder
A Zamfara State High Court has sentenced Abdulshakur Tukur and Abdullahi Buba to death by hanging after finding them guilty of conspiracy and the murder of Ahmad Yakubu.
Chief Judge Kulu Isa Aliyu announced the verdict following a thorough review of evidence and testimonies from both the prosecution and defense. The court determined that Tukur and Buba killed Yakubu in the Barakallahu area of Gusau on December 13, 2021.
In addition to the death sentence for culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code, the court imposed a separate seven-year prison term on both men for criminal conspiracy under Section 97.
Zamfara State prosecuting counsel Kabiru Samaila expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to secure the convictions.
Defense attorney Zakari Abubakar noted that the trial was conducted peacefully but mentioned his team would review the judgment before deciding on an appeal.
The court addressed additional suspects connected to the case, including Aminu Baba, who was accused of purchasing body parts from the victim. Baba’s case was dismissed following his death in custody. Another suspect, Ahmad Tukur, was acquitted due to a lack of sufficient evidence tying him to the crime.
The case initially garnered national attention in January 2022 when the suspects were charged with criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, and cannibalism. During early stages, three minors reportedly admitted to the charges, while the adult suspects denied the allegations prior to the case’s transfer to the High Court for trial.
