Akon Reflects on Collaboration with Michael Jackson

Senegalese-American singer Akon recently shared insights into his career during an episode of the “We Need To Talk” podcast, highlighting his collaboration with the late pop star Michael Jackson as a defining moment in his life.

Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, described working with Jackson as the “proudest moment” of his career. He expressed admiration for the iconic artist, noting, “I was already a full-blown celebrity at the point the photo was taken. But I am a child compared to this man.”

The 53-year-old artist expressed his youthful admiration for Jackson, stating that the pop legend serves as a role model for many. “I grew up looking up to him. He is like everybody’s idol,” Akon remarked.

In addition to discussing his work with Jackson, Akon touched on his support for African music. He mentioned that he once signed notable Nigerian Afrobeats artists, including P-Square. While he clarified that his involvement with Wizkid was indirect, he noted that he played a role through Banky W’s Empire Mate Entertainment, the label to which Wizkid was signed.

Akon commended the talent emerging from Nigeria, remarking, “Nigerians are the most intelligent people on the planet. They have done amazingly well with Afrobeats.”
