Why Nigerians must counter toxic pop-culture that glamourizes drug abuse – Marwa

NDLEA Chief Calls for Action Against Drug Abuse Culture

ABUJA — Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has urged Nigerians to combat the detrimental influences of pop culture that normalize the use of illicit substances, particularly among the youth.

Marwa made this statement during the inauguration of the agency’s radio station, Clean Beat 91.5FM, on May 21, 2026. He appealed to all stakeholders and responsible citizens to support the NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative, aimed at protecting the country’s youth from the dangers of drug acceptance as a social norm.

“Behind every statistic of drug abuse is a human being—often a vulnerable teenager looking for an escape, or a family searching for solutions,” Marwa said. He emphasized that the radio station would promote a positive narrative, countering the glamorization of drug use with stories of recovery and accurate information on addiction.

Marwa warned that if the negative narrative surrounding drug use remains unchallenged, the consequences could be severe. He described substance abuse as a multifaceted issue that threatens public health, security, and economic stability.

Despite the challenges, Marwa expressed optimism about the future. He stated that the launch of Clean Beat 91.5FM signifies a proactive strategy by the NDLEA to address drug issues head-on. “We are amplifying hope,” he declared, emphasizing that a drug-free Nigeria is attainable.

The NDLEA, he noted, continues to be active in enforcement, intercepting drug shipments and dismantling criminal networks, while also prioritizing education and prevention to combat substance abuse effectively.

The importance of the radio station was underscored by Cheikh Ousmane Touré, the United Nations Country Representative, who praised the NDLEA for utilizing a radio platform for advocacy. Touré, represented by Dr. Akanidomo Ibanga, noted that the initiative aligns with the National Drug Control Master Plan.

Charles Ebuebu, Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), commended Marwa’s leadership and highlighted the station as a means of fostering national orientation and social change. He underlined the significance of protecting and empowering Nigeria’s youth in the fight against substance abuse.

Similarly, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), lauded the radio station as a tool for positive behavioral change and community reorientation.

As the NDLEA embarks on this initiative, it aims to create a lasting impact on public perception and behavior regarding drug use in Nigeria.
