Remi Tinubu Calls For End To Obstetric Fistula, Child Marriage

Nigerian First Lady Urges Action to Combat Obstetric Fistula

LAGOS, Nigeria — Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has called for immediate action to address obstetric fistula and other preventable maternal health conditions affecting women and girls across the nation.

In her message commemorating the 2026 International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, Tinubu asserted that no woman or girl should endure a condition that is both preventable and treatable. She emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “Her Health, Her Right: Shaping a Future without Fistula,” highlighting that access to quality maternal healthcare is a fundamental human right that must be guaranteed for all.

Tinubu identified early marriage and teenage pregnancy as major causes of obstetric fistula, noting that many young girls are often not physically prepared for childbirth. She pointed out that harmful traditional practices and a lack of awareness further hinder access to skilled care and essential health information.

The First Lady urged stakeholders to prioritize initiatives aimed at ending child marriage, expanding access to education for girls, and improving healthcare services nationwide. She called for unified efforts to achieve safer childbirth outcomes, emphasizing the necessity of creating a future where no woman faces death or injury during delivery.

In closing her message, Tinubu wished Nigerians a meaningful International Day to End Obstetric Fistula.
