Fire at Sabo Market in Ikorodu Attributed to Electrical Surge
Lagos — The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that a fire in Sabo Market, Ikorodu, in the early hours of Tuesday was likely caused by an electrical surge.
According to a statement from LASEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, the fire was first reported at approximately 1:10 a.m. Emergency responders from LASEMA’s Tiger Squad, in coordination with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, quickly arrived at the scene.
Upon arrival, responders discovered several market stalls engulfed in flames. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated in one shop before rapidly spreading to adjacent stores, believed to be triggered by an electrical surge linked to public power supply.
LASEMA officials stated that the rapid response of emergency personnel prevented the fire from spreading to other areas of the market and surrounding buildings. A total of 17 out of the 32 shops in the affected section were destroyed, resulting in the loss of goods such as provisions, groceries, and other valuables. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities or injuries.
The agency confirmed that recovery operations have concluded and its team has since withdrew from the scene after containing the fire.
LASEMA commended the professionalism and coordinated efforts of its Tiger Squad and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service in managing the incident.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, emphasized the importance of electrical safety among traders and market leaders to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He advised shop owners to ensure proper electrical wiring, avoid overloading appliances, and conduct regular inspections of their electrical systems.
Oke-Osanyintolu also encouraged residents to report emergencies promptly through the state’s toll-free lines, 112 and 767, to ensure a swift response. He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and livelihoods across the state.
