Obi never expelled Northerners from Anambra — Media Office

Peter Obi Media Office Rejects Allegations on Governance Record
The Peter Obi Media Office (POMO) has dismissed recent allegations aimed at distorting the governance record of Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State.
In a statement issued Sunday, POMO, through spokesperson Ibrahim Umar, labeled these claims as false and malicious. The office pointed to accusations concerning Obi’s interactions with individuals from Northern Nigeria during his time in office, emphasizing that such narratives stem from political opponents who cannot reconcile with his notable record of accountability and development.
POMO specifically addressed the recurring assertion that Obi had targeted Northern traders and individuals during his governorship. “In truth, during Obi’s leadership, there was a compassionate social welfare initiative focused on assisting vulnerable individuals, including unaccompanied minors from various states,” the statement read. It further clarified that there was no effort of “expulsion” or ethnic cleansing, but rather a structured rehabilitation program that benefitted people from all regions.
The statement also highlighted Obi’s strong relationships with both Northern and Muslim communities in Anambra. “Records from his eight-year tenure show that even amid significant national ethnic and religious tensions, Mr. Obi acted as a protector for the Northern community, particularly in regions such as the Onitsha Hausa Quarter,” it noted.
Under Obi’s administration, support was provided to Muslim residents for their pilgrimage to Mecca, reflecting equal respect and governmental backing for all communities. The POMO also asserted that Northern traders were allowed to operate freely without government harassment during Obi’s tenure.
The media office contended that the motivations behind this smear campaign relate to Obi’s vision for economic transformation in Northern Nigeria. “Those trying to create friction between Mr. Obi and the Northern populace appear threatened by his message, which focuses on enhancing productivity and alleviating poverty,” the statement explained.
POMO underscored Obi’s belief in the North as a critical area for Nigeria’s future economic development, asserting that he seeks to shift the country from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based one.
In conclusion, the Peter Obi Media Office vowed not to overlook the ongoing misinformation while acknowledging the fact-based nature of their rebuttal.
