Michael Jordan Honors Pep Guardiola at Manchester City Farewell Event

Basketball icon Michael Jordan paid tribute to Pep Guardiola during a farewell ceremony for the departing Manchester City manager. The event took place on Monday, culminating in an open-top bus parade through the streets of Manchester, followed by a celebration inside the Co-op Live arena.

A sellout crowd of 19,000 attendees watched as Guardiola received a special video message from Jordan, the six-time NBA champion. “Hey, Pep, this is Michael Jordan,” he said. “I just want to congratulate you on an unbelievable career. Enjoy your retirement. Good luck on the links, and keep them straight. Congratulations.”

Guardiola is stepping down after a record-breaking tenure that saw him lead City to 17 major trophies over the past decade. The event celebrated not only the men’s team’s domestic cup double but also the success of the women’s team and the FA Youth Cup.

Among the notable attendees were former City captain Vincent Kompany, now the head coach of Bayern Munich, and Noel Gallagher of the Britpop band Oasis. In a highlight of the program dedicated to the women’s team, Khadija “Bunny” Shaw, the club’s record scorer, announced she had signed a new four-year contract, quelling rumors linking her to Chelsea.

Superstar forward Erling Haaland addressed the gathering, expressing his determination to uphold the club’s legacy despite the departures of Guardiola and veteran players Bernardo Silva and John Stones. “It has been an up-and-down season,” Haaland noted. “But we are going to try to keep pushing and fight for the biggest trophies we can.”

As part of the event, Guardiola was invited to speak following a presentation of all 20 trophies won during his time at City, carried to the stage by players, coaches, and club figures, including Gallagher.

Reflecting on his experience, Guardiola expressed gratitude to the fans and the club. “Thank you so much for coming here tonight to say bye,” he said. “I’ve felt the connection that this club has had from the first minute.”

In a touching moment following City’s last match under his leadership, Guardiola remarked on the bond he forged with players, staff, and fans. He spoke movingly of his pride in having his 95-year-old father, Valentin, present at the game. “Imagine as a dad, at 95, to feel how these people love his son,” he said.

His daughter Maria also shared a heartfelt message on social media, reflecting on her father’s impact. “Years from now, people will talk about football and try to explain what this era felt like,” she wrote on Instagram. “The biggest privilege has been to live it all beside you. For the world, these were historic football moments; for us, they were family memories.”

The event concluded with an air of celebration and nostalgia, marking the end of a significant chapter in Guardiola’s illustrious career.
