Benue has moved beyond ‘days of locust’ under Ortom — Tersoo Kula

Benue State Government Praises Progress Under Governor Alia

The Benue State Government has expressed strong support for the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, highlighting significant advancements made since his tenure began. Officials assert that the state will not revert to the conditions described as the “days of locust” during the leadership of former Governor Samuel Ortom.

In a statement released by Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alia, the administration emphasized a comprehensive transformation across various sectors since Alia took office. Kula contended that the governor entered the role with a determined vision to improve conditions following years of alleged mismanagement by the Peoples Democratic Party under Ortom.

The statement criticized the previous administration for neglecting workers and pensioners, leading to a decline in public infrastructure despite numerous federal interventions and loans. It claimed that Ortom’s tenure resulted in debts exceeding N300 billion at the state level and more than N100 billion in local government liabilities.

Additionally, Kula alleged that the current administration has inherited various judgment debts and garnishee orders tied to decisions made by the former government. He accused Ortom’s regime of prioritizing propaganda over tangible solutions to the state’s challenges.

Highlighting achievements under Governor Alia, Kula noted improvements in workers’ welfare, including consistent salary payments and increased attention to pensioners. The administration has initiated multiple infrastructure projects, such as constructing over 40 intra-city roads, installing solar streetlights, rehabilitating the Otobi Water Works, and establishing institutions and industries to stimulate economic growth.

Kula also addressed recent media comments from a spokesperson for Ortom, claiming such remarks aim to diminish the progress of the Alia administration. He stated, “The Benue people have come to understand the difference between leadership and propaganda; the difference between progress and deception.”

The government concluded that residents are broadly supportive of the current governance trajectory and remain committed to avoiding a return to past practices.
