Police arrest suspect in N1.02bn PMS theft, recover N300m assets in Lagos

Lagos Police Arrest Key Suspect in N1.02 Billion Fuel Theft Case

LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a primary suspect in connection with the alleged theft of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) valued at 1.02 billion naira. Authorities also recovered assets exceeding 300 million naira tied to the crime.

Police Commissioner Fatai Tijani announced the arrest during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday. He stated that the action followed a petition from MEA Energy, which reported a conspiracy involving two suspects.

“Upon receiving the complaint, we initiated a discreet investigation bolstered by intelligence gathering, surveillance, and technical operations,” Tijani said.

The investigation culminated in the 12-day tracking of a 38-year-old suspect, who was apprehended in Delta after attempting to evade capture. Tijani explained that the arrest was the result of coordinated efforts among law enforcement agencies across state lines.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to his involvement in the alleged crime and provided information that led to the recovery of cash and properties valued at more than 300 million naira, believed to be proceeds from the illegal diversion of petroleum products.

Investigators are continuing their efforts to locate a second suspect, who remains at large. Tijani confirmed that the arrested individual will be charged in court once investigations are completed.
