The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, along with prominent figures such as the outgoing President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Adewale Adeyanju, and Aminu Umar, President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, will convene for the 2026 Shipping Correspondent Association of Nigeria (SCAN) Dockworkers’ Day.
The event, set for June 4 at Rockview Hotels in Apapa, will focus on sustainable practices and the welfare of dockworkers at Nigerian seaports. Titled “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices for Dockworkers,” the day aims to foster discussions on environmentally responsible port operations, the integration of efficiency-enhancing technologies, and enhancements to working conditions for dockworkers.
SCAN has indicated that the initiative seeks to align Nigeria’s port operations with global environmental standards, ensuring that dockworkers are included in the transition toward greener, technology-driven maritime systems.
In a joint statement from SCAN President Moses Ebosele and Organising Committee Chairman Yusuf Babalola, the association emphasized that the annual Dockworkers’ Day is an important platform for recognizing the contributions of dockworkers to the national economy.
The statement noted that the event will also address various environmental and operational challenges currently facing Nigeria’s maritime sector.
“SCAN Dockworkers’ Day serves as a platform to acknowledge the essential contributions of dockworkers to our economy, while also addressing the urgent need for sustainable practices in our ports,” the statement read.
As the global maritime industry evolves, SCAN highlighted the need to equip dockworkers with the skills and tools necessary to adapt to green initiatives and digital transformations in shipping operations.
Aminu Umar is slated to deliver the keynote address, with Adeyanju, who also serves as Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, expected to chair the occasion.
Goodwill messages will be delivered by key stakeholders, including the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, and the Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority.
