Fatal road crash kills driver in Lagos — LASTMA

A lone car accident on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos has resulted in the death of the driver, prompting a rapid response from officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force.

According to LASTMA, the incident occurred early Saturday morning at the Charity Bus Stop, near Iyana Isolo, along the busy corridor. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver lost control of a Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle, which subsequently overturned multiple times before coming to rest.

The force of the crash was significant, leading to the immediate death of the driver, whose body became trapped in the wreckage. LASTMA officials, who were managing traffic in the area, quickly arrived on the scene. They worked in collaboration with officers from the Mosafejo Police Division to extract the body while ensuring traffic flow and minimizing the risk of additional accidents.

After the recovery of the body, members of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) transported the deceased to a public mortuary according to health protocols. The damaged Honda Pilot was then secured and delivered to Mosafejo Police Division for further investigation.

Authorities have initiated an inquiry to determine the causes of the fatal accident.

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. He emphasized the importance of road safety, urging motorists to adhere to speed limits and comply with traffic regulations, particularly during late-night and early-morning travel.

“Motorists are strongly urged to avoid reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, and excessive speeding, which can lead to tragic outcomes,” Bakare-Oki stated. “The safety of every road user must be prioritized, as no journey is so urgent that it warrants compromising that safety.” He reiterated the need for vigilance on the roads.
