Police arrest two for attempted theft of two-week-old baby in Abia

Abia State Police Arrest Two for Child Theft Attempt
The Abia State Police Command has arrested two individuals on charges of conspiracy, attempted child theft, and possession of illegal drugs.
The suspects, Nzubechi Chinagorom and Chinonso Chibundu, are both residents of Olokoro in the Umuahia South Local Government Area. The arrests were confirmed in a statement released on Saturday by Deputy Superintendent of Police Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer.
According to the statement, police acted on credible intelligence, collaborating with local vigilante groups to apprehend the suspects. It was reported that the suspects attempted to abduct a two-week-old baby girl from her mother, Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo.
During the incident, Chinagorom allegedly stabbed Chinyereugo with a kitchen knife, causing the infant to fall and strike her head on the ground. The suspects fled the scene upon realizing that Chinyereugo was calling for help.
They were later located at a nearby bus stop, where they were reportedly attempting to purchase drugs.
Both the mother and child were transported to the hospital for treatment and have since recovered. Chinaka indicated that the suspects have been taken into custody, evidence has been collected, and a thorough investigation is being conducted at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
The suspects are scheduled to be arraigned in court on June 2, 2026.
