Three killed, 10 buildings burnt as violence rocks Kwara community

Kwara State Police Launch Manhunt Following Deadly Violence in Ilesha Baruba

ILSHA BARUBA, Nigeria (May 31, 2026) — The Kwara State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for individuals involved in a violent attack that resulted in two fatalities and the destruction of approximately 10 buildings in Ilesha Baruba, located in the Baruten Local Government Area.

The incident began when a confrontation occurred between an unknown Fulani man and an Islamic scholar, identified as Mohammed Ilyasu. Both men suffered machete wounds during the altercation. Ilyasu was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital, while the other individual succumbed to injuries later.

Following the deaths, a group of youths reportedly invaded the hospital, seized the body of the deceased Fulani man, and set it ablaze. Another person passing through the area was also reportedly attacked by the mob and suffered severe burns.

The police noted that the violence resulted in the destruction of several buildings belonging to the Fulani community, including the residence of community leader Alhaji Hassan.

In response to the unrest, police and military personnel have been deployed to the area to restore order.

Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi condemned the violence, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the law. “No individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding any incident,” he stated.

The police command is actively investigating the matter and assured residents that those responsible for the attacks will be apprehended and prosecuted.
