Insecurity: ‘They will arrest us if we speak up’ – Portable defends Nigerian celebrities
Nigerian Singer Portable Expresses Fear of Speaking Out on Insecurity
Controversial Nigerian artist Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, known as Portable, has voiced concerns regarding the country’s escalating insecurity. He stated that he refrains from condemning the situation due to fears of potential arrest from authorities.
Portable’s comments came in response to an appeal from British-Nigerian rapper Skepta, who urged Nigerian celebrities to address the growing economic hardships and insecurity in Nigeria.
During a video broadcast, Portable remarked, “Skepta, God bless you for remembering and speaking for Nigeria. However, you’re asking us, Nigerian celebrities, to speak up and demand justice. Do you want the Nigerian government to pick us up? They will arrest us if we speak out.”
He emphasized that it is easier for Nigerians living abroad to criticize the government without the fear of repercussions, stating, “The Nigerian government can’t arrest them from abroad.”
Portable expressed a sense of oppression, noting that some individuals face persecution for previous statements. “We need help and support, not just prayers,” he said. He explained that many celebrities share concerns about the issues in Nigeria but are deterred from speaking out due to the potential consequences.
“I’m focused on making money and improving my life,” he continued. “It’s not that we don’t care about Nigeria, but the risks of speaking out are too high for us. If we were abroad, it would feel safer to voice our opinions.”
