World Cup 2026: Why Nigerian-born Liverpool star, Rio Ngumoha is not eligible to play for England

Liverpool’s Ngumoha Excluded from World Cup Roster
Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha will not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even if England requires last-minute adjustments to its squad. The 17-year-old was not included in head coach Thomas Tuchel’s 55-man provisional roster, a decision announced nearly a month ago.
Despite his absence from the provisional squad, Ngumoha was selected as one of the training players within Tuchel’s 26-man roster for the World Cup heading to the United States. The training group includes several other young talents, such as Alex Scott, Josh King, and Ethan Nwaneri.
Ngumoha made his senior debut for England on June 6, coming on as a substitute during the national team’s 1-0 victory over New Zealand in an international friendly. This appearance made him the fifth-youngest player to debut for the Three Lions, and he notably received the Player of the Match award.
Although Ngumoha showcased impressive skills during the friendly, he will not be eligible to play in the World Cup if any injuries or illnesses arise before England’s opening match against Croatia on June 17. FIFA regulations require that any replacement player must be included in the provisional squad.
Ngumoha will, however, have the opportunity to take the field for England in their final friendly match against Costa Rica on June 10.
