Edo NDLEA to Intensify Drug Raids Ahead of 2027 Elections
BENIN CITY, Nigeria – The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) plans to ramp up operations targeting drug hotspots throughout the state in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
Commander Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju announced the initiative during a meeting on June 9, 2026, with Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner Obo Effanga and Osunbor Kelly Omokaro, President of the Faculty of Peace Organization.
Ofoyeju stressed that these operations aim to ensure peaceful and violence-free elections. “We will conduct targeted raid operations on identified drug flashpoints before, during, and after the elections,” he said. “Our goal is to remove illicit drugs from the streets and prevent criminal elements from causing disruption.”
He affirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to promoting credible elections, stating, “Nigerians deserve peaceful, credible elections, and NDLEA will help pave the way for that.”
Ofoyeju highlighted the growing partnership between the NDLEA, government institutions, and civil society in combatting drug trafficking and abuse. He expressed satisfaction with the engagement of organizations like the Faculty of Peace, emphasizing the collective effort needed in addressing drug abuse prevention.
“We welcome partners committed to building a drug-free society through education and accountability,” he added.
Resident Electoral Commissioner Obo Effanga commended the NDLEA for its support and professionalism during previous election monitoring efforts. He recognized the agency’s role in reducing drug-related violence that could undermine election integrity and called for continued collaboration in the lead-up to the upcoming elections.
Omokaro noted that the Faculty of Peace Organization focuses on enhancing accountability and preventing drug abuse among youths. He praised the NDLEA for its efforts in curbing drug supply and called for closer collaboration on advocacy and community outreach initiatives.
As the elections approach, the NDLEA aims to play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process in Edo State.
