BREAKING: Edo govt shuts down three schools over DSS alarm of possible abduction

Edo State Temporarily Closes Three Secondary Schools Amid Security Concerns
Benin City, Edo State – The Edo State Government has announced the temporary closure of three public secondary schools in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area. The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.
The closure was detailed in a circular issued by the State Ministry of Education on June 9, 2026. This decision comes in response to a security warning from the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding potential mass abductions of schoolchildren in the Edo North senatorial district.
The announcement, signed by Enodolomwanyi Otamere on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, was directed to the principals of the impacted schools. While academic and non-academic activities are suspended indefinitely, the ministry has permitted students currently sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to access examination facilities under strict security measures.
Candidates are to receive supervision from relevant security agencies and local community stakeholders during the examinations. The ministry has indicated that intelligence reports have highlighted credible threats affecting the safety of students and staff in various parts of Akoko Edo.
“Consequently, and in line with the Government’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, approval has been granted for the temporary closure of the affected schools with immediate effect,” the statement read.
Principals of the schools are tasked with ensuring the secure and orderly release of students to their parents and guardians. They are also responsible for safeguarding school facilities and maintaining communication with the Ministry, the Chief Inspector of Education, and local security agencies.
The State Government has urged parents, guardians, and community members to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement. Efforts are underway to ensure the safety of all citizens and to restore normal academic activities as soon as feasible.
