Major breakthrough as ISWAP bomb-making specialist, senior commander surrender to troops in Yobe

Troops Facilitate Surrender of Suspected ISWAP Members in Yobe State
GEIDAM, Yobe State — Soldiers participating in Operation Hadin Kai have successfully facilitated the surrender of two individuals believed to be senior members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), including a bomb-making expert with crucial knowledge of the group’s operations. The surrender occurred on June 8, according to military sources.
The insurgents have been identified as Ismail Mohammed and Abu Umar. Abu Umar has been characterized as a notable engineer for ISWAP, specializing in the design and deployment of Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs), commonly known as car bombs.
Military officials say that individuals skilled in creating and deploying improvised explosive devices play vital roles within terrorist organizations, equipping them with the technical expertise needed to conduct high-profile attacks against military targets, civilian areas, and critical infrastructure. The information gained from such individuals is considered valuable for security agencies, potentially aiding in the identification of bomb manufacturing sites, storage facilities, training camps, and logistical routes utilized by insurgents.
Ismail Mohammed is reported to be a commander associated with the Baa Shuwa axis in the Timbuktu Triangle, a region identified as a strategic stronghold of insurgents in the North-East.
The surrender of Abu Umar is particularly significant given that VBIEDs have historically been among the most lethal weapons used by terrorist organizations in the region. Attacks involving these devices have targeted military facilities, marketplaces, places of worship, and other public spaces, leading to numerous casualties and widespread destruction.
This development represents a notable achievement for security forces engaged in the ongoing efforts against Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents across the Lake Chad region.
