Ghana Midfielder Thomas Partey Denied Visa for World Cup Opener

June 13, 2026

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey will not participate in his team’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Canada denied his visa application. The denial comes as Partey awaits trial in the United Kingdom on multiple charges of rape.

FIFA announced on Friday that the 32-year-old Partey would be unable to leave his team’s base camp in Smithfield, Rhode Island, for Ghana’s match against Panama in Toronto on Wednesday.

“The Canadian government has refused his visa application,” FIFA stated. The organization noted that it does not play a role in the immigration processes of host nations, emphasizing that visa determinations are solely made by the host government.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued a statement confirming its process for assessing individuals seeking entry into Canada, highlighting that each application is evaluated based on applicable laws and facts. “Canada is proud to be a host country for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and is working to facilitate a successful event while maintaining the safety and security of Canadians,” the IRCC said, adding that hosting major events does not alter Canada’s immigration policies.

Following the visa denial, Partey was returning to Ghana’s camp in Rhode Island. He is expected to join the team on June 23 for their match against England in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and will conclude group play on June 27 against Croatia in Philadelphia.

Partey is scheduled to stand trial in November on allegations stemming from his tenure with English club Arsenal from 2020 to 2025. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In related news, Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi is also awaiting trial on similar charges in Paris.

Ghana is making its fifth appearance in the last six World Cups.
