Nigeria’s politics lacks standards -Arewa Consultative Forum
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has expressed concerns about the lack of accountability in Nigeria’s political landscape. In an interview on Arise Television, ACF Publicity Secretary Professor Tukur Mohammed Baba asserted that this deficiency has negatively affected citizens over the past four years, despite any favorable statistics that may suggest otherwise.
Baba highlighted that the absence of standards in Nigerian politics stems from a general failure to demand accountability. He criticized the flexible nature of the country’s political processes, emphasizing that no institution, including the judiciary, operates with consistency.
“People have filtered through with fake credentials; that is the nature of the politics we play,” Baba stated. “We are flexible in our demands for the country and in our demand for accountability.”
Furthermore, he noted that the Nigerian electorate is not a monolithic group. Rather, it is divided into various sections with differing interests. Baba suggested that many citizens are primarily focused on the outcomes of governance rather than the qualifications of those in power.
“What matters to them is the effect of good governance,” he said. “At the end of the day, is the person on top able to deliver good governance that satisfies welfare, health, education, housing, transportation, and so on?”
Baba concluded that the majority of the population is more concerned about the impact of governance on their daily lives than the qualifications of their leaders.
