LOS ANGELES — The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially launched in the United States on Friday, featuring a lavish opening ceremony at SoFi Stadium, now temporarily referred to as Los Angeles Stadium. This event welcomed soccer fans ahead of the tournament’s first match between the U.S. and Paraguay.

A dramatic voiceover projected, “Welcome to the USA,” accompanied by visuals of the iconic Hollywood sign displayed on large screens throughout the 70,000-seat venue. The ceremony included a lively performance by a marching band, as well as appearances by artists including Future, Tyla, Anitta, and K-pop sensation Lisa. Spectacular costumes and props designed to reflect Los Angeles street art enhanced the celebratory atmosphere.

Actor Jason Sudeikis and singer Katy Perry were slated to perform just before the kickoff, while a multitude of celebrities, including Tom Cruise, David Beckham, Halle Berry, Rob Lowe, Owen Wilson, and Paris Hilton, watched as dancers circled a oversized World Cup trophy in the stadium.

The event featured striking “FIFA” letters, suspended from the venue’s roof in gold, a color famously associated with former President Donald Trump, who participated by phone, extending well-wishes to the U.S. team.

American fans, many dressed as Uncle Sam or other patriotic figures, showed their support while booing the Paraguayan team during warm-ups. “I believe we can go all the way,” said fan Isaac Pizarro, who purchased tickets at $1,900 each for himself and his 14-year-old son Jacob.

Supporters from Paraguay also made their presence felt, with numerous flags spotted among the sea of red, white, and blue representing both nations.

U.S. center-back Chris Richards was included in the starting lineup despite previous concerns about injury, as was Paraguayan winger Julio Enciso.

Previous matches for cohosts Mexico and Canada saw them off to a strong start, with Mexico defeating South Africa 2-0 and Canada earning a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina, marking their first point in World Cup history.
