‘Not lack of talent’ — Peter Obi blames leadership for Nigeria’s World Cup absence

Peter Obi: Nigeria’s Absence from FIFA World Cup is Leadership Failure

LAGOS, Nigeria — Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), stated that Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup highlights a failure in leadership rather than a lack of talent. His comments came in a statement shared on his official social media channels.

Obi pointed to the successes of Nigerian entertainers and athletes with Nigerian heritage participating in the tournament as evidence of the country’s potential. He emphasized the need for political leaders to foster an environment conducive to youth talent development.

“Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup stems not from a lack of talent but from a conspicuous deficiency in political leadership that has failed to create an enabling environment for talent development,” Obi remarked.

He underlined that the notable performances of Nigerian artists, as well as individuals competing for other nations, reveal the untapped potential within Nigeria. Obi called for heightened investment in youth development.

Additionally, Obi praised musician Davido for raising awareness about Nigeria’s security issues during the tournament. Davido wore a custom black leather jacket inscribed with “BRING THEM HOME,” which listed the names of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers allegedly kidnapped by bandits in Oyo State.

“By utilizing his international platform, Davido effectively highlighted Nigeria’s security crisis, transcending mere entertainment,” Obi noted.

Obi also stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges require both national and international attention. He expressed optimism that with effective leadership and intentional efforts to create opportunities for youth, Nigeria can overcome its current obstacles.

A more prosperous and productive Nigeria, he added, remains an achievable goal.
