Drone Strikes Hit Nabatieh Amid Fragile Ceasefire Negotiations
Published June 16, 2026
Multiple Israeli drone strikes in southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh governorate resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA). This escalation occurs in the context of ongoing ceasefire negotiations between the United States and Iran, aimed at halting hostilities on multiple fronts.
On Tuesday, drone attacks targeted two vehicles in the village of Mayfadoun, while a third was struck in the nearby village of Shoukin, as reported by NNA.
Despite ongoing discussions, Iranian officials have insisted that any ceasefire agreement must address Israeli military actions in Lebanon. The prime minister of Pakistan, serving as a mediator, stated on Monday that the proposed agreement includes an immediate cessation of military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that Israel’s ongoing presence in southern Lebanon would constitute a breach of the ceasefire, asserting that “without the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territories they occupied during this war, the war has not fully come to an end.”
In a recent conversation with Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf urged the United States to pressure Israel into ceasing military operations in Lebanon and withdrawing from occupied areas.
Following the announcement of the US-Iran agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed that Israel intends to continue its occupation of southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group, has indicated that it has received assurances from Iran regarding their intention to demand the withdrawal of Israeli troops in upcoming talks with the United States, according to Reuters.
Since the resumption of hostilities on March 2, Israeli strikes in Lebanon have claimed the lives of at least 3,826 individuals and resulted in 11,851 injuries, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
