2026 World Cup: Mexico becomes first team to qualify for Round of 32

Mexico Advances to Round of 32 in 2026 World Cup
Mexico has secured a spot in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup following a 1-0 victory over South Korea on Friday.
In their second match of Group A, Mexico capitalized on a mistake from South Korean goalkeeper Seung-Gyu Kim. After Kim mishandled a header from Raul Jimenez, Luis Romo was able to find the ball and skillfully lifted it over the keeper to score.
The match highlighted the performance of both goalkeepers. Mexico’s Raul Rangel made an impressive double save to deny a late attempt by substitute Gue-Sung Cho.
With this win, Mexico remains the only team in the tournament with six points from two matches, positioning them favorably to finish as group winners. This outcome would allow Javier Aguirre’s team to play their Round of 32 match in Mexico City.
