Insecurity: Nigerian govt explains how media can help fight terrorism, other security risks

Nigerian Officials Discuss Media’s Role in Combatting Security Threats

ABUJA — The Nigerian government emphasized the pivotal role of the media in addressing the nation’s challenges related to terrorism, banditry, and other security concerns during a summit held on Thursday.

Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, alongside National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, addressed attendees at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ (NUJ) Security Summit. They urged journalists to view themselves as essential partners in the fight against insecurity in the country.

Idris highlighted the importance of a collaborative relationship between the media and security agencies, stating that it should be built on mutual respect and professionalism. He stressed that national security cannot thrive in an environment rife with misinformation.

“National security is not served when misinformation is amplified without verification, nor is it served when legitimate public concerns are ignored,” Idris said, urging journalists to adhere to ethical standards in reporting security issues.

Representing Ribadu, aide Chido Onumah reinforced the government’s recognition of the media’s duty to inform the public. He underscored the necessity for a structured information-sharing system that balances transparency and operational security.

“We are all in this together,” Onumah stated. “Journalists must have access to credible information; security agencies must improve their communication and transparency.”

The summit, themed “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building,” featured discussions led by NUJ President Alhassan Yahaya Abdu, security officials, and media stakeholders. This event occurs amid a notable increase in security incidents across Nigeria, resulting in significant loss of life.
