Ohanaeze affirms continued recognition of Nnamdi Kanu as IPOB leader, dismisses suspension

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Reaffirms Leadership of Nnamdi Kanu Amid Internal Disputes
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, a prominent sociocultural organization representing the Igbos, has reaffirmed its recognition of Nnamdi Kanu as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This declaration follows the recent dissolution of the IPOB’s Directorate of State (DOS), previously led by Chika Edoziem.
Kanu made the decision to dissolve the third administration of the DOS on Wednesday, appointing Chris Nwaogu as the head of the newly established fourth administration. In response, Edoziem issued a statement asserting Kanu’s suspension as IPOB leader.
In a statement issued on Friday, signed by Deputy President General Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Assistant Deputy Secretary General Prof. Chibuikeya Achoakawa, Ohanaeze addressed the confusion surrounding the purported suspension, which has generated significant concern within Igbo communities both locally and in the diaspora.
The organization declared, “After careful review and consultation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide states unequivocally that the alleged suspension of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not recognized, not validated, and holds no institutional or communal legitimacy.”
The statement further clarified that claims made by Edoziem and other dissenting members are unofficial and do not change Kanu’s recognized status within the movement.
Ohanaeze expressed apprehension regarding the potential destabilizing effects of internal conflicts within IPOB on the fragile peace currently enjoyed in the South-East region. The organization noted that over the past eleven months, there has been a gradual return to stability in Igboland, highlighted by increased agricultural activity, the revival of cultural festivals, and growing economic engagement.
The statement emphasized that these developments are delicate and should not be jeopardized by unnecessary disputes or inflammatory rhetoric.
Ohanaeze called on all stakeholders, particularly discontented members of IPOB, to approach internal matters with restraint and maturity. It stressed that dialogue is the most effective means of conflict resolution, urging that grievances should be addressed through structured engagement and peaceful reconciliation.
Furthermore, Ohanaeze reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue among Igbo stakeholders and advocating for the release of detained Biafran activists, including Kanu. The organization also vowed to oppose any actions that could threaten the hard-won peace in the region.
