Movement Restrictions Announced Ahead of Kano Bye-Election

KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Police Command has announced a restriction of movement in select areas in response to the upcoming bye-election for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency, scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

The restrictions will apply to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas during the election period. According to a statement released on Friday by Chief Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the initiative is part of a broader security plan established at the recent Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) meeting held on Wednesday.

Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori urged the full implementation of the security measures to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process. “The security architecture developed with all ICCES partners will be fully deployed to guarantee a peaceful and orderly electoral process,” the statement indicated.

Movement restrictions will be in effect from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on election day. Those exemptions include essential workers, officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accredited observers, and authorized media personnel.

Additionally, the police have announced the deployment of security personnel at polling units, collation centers, and other critical locations to safeguard voters and electoral materials.

Authorities warned against electoral malpractice, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward violence, vote buying, ballot box snatching, and misinformation. “Anyone caught engaging in such activities will face arrest and prosecution under the Electoral Act,” the statement noted.

Residents of Kano have been urged to maintain peace and adhere to election guidelines, while also reporting any suspicious activities to security agencies via designated emergency contact numbers.
