EU-SDGN urges INEC to ensure real-time result transmission, curb vote buying in Ekiti poll

EU Election Observation Group Urges INEC to Enhance Electoral Integrity in Ekiti State
The European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Election Observation Hub has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement real-time electronic transmission of polling unit results and intensify efforts to combat vote-buying ahead of the Ekiti State governorship election scheduled for Saturday.
Addressing accredited journalists, the observation hub highlighted the importance of transparency, professionalism, and accountability among electoral stakeholders to facilitate a credible, peaceful, and inclusive election.
The group emphasized the need for INEC to ensure the prompt deployment of sensitive election materials, confirm that all Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices are operational, activate its election situation room, and maintain transparent communication regarding results at every stage of the collation process.
Furthermore, the observation hub called on security agencies to uphold neutrality and professionalism during the electoral process. It cautioned against the excessive use of military presence, which could intimidate voters and discourage participation.
The organization recommended that security operatives engage in intelligence-led operations to effectively address vote-buying, electoral violence, and other offenses throughout the election period.
Political parties and candidates were also urged to adhere to the peace accord they signed, rejecting practices such as vote-buying, voter intimidation, and the employment of political thugs.
The media was reminded of its responsibilities to verify information prior to publication, avoid disseminating misinformation, and refrain from announcing election results from unauthorized sources.
Eligible voters are encouraged to arrive at polling units by 8:30 a.m., cast their votes according to their conscience, and report any incidents of violence, vote-buying, or other electoral malpractices to the relevant authorities.
The EU-SDGN Observation Hub described the upcoming Ekiti governorship election as a crucial test of Nigeria’s Electoral Act 2026 and a precursor to the 2027 general elections. The organization called on all stakeholders to collaborate to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
