Benin Monarch Calls Emergency Meeting Amid Rising Insecurity in Edo State
Benin City, Nigeria — The Ewuare II of Benin has summoned traditional healers and priests to an emergency meeting in response to escalating insecurity in Edo State and across the country.
A statement released on Friday and signed by Chief Victor Nosakhare, on behalf of the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, announced that the meeting is set for 12 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City.
The palace emphasized that the gathering, convened at the instruction of Oba Ewuare II, should be treated with urgency. The focus of the meeting will be to explore traditional methods that could complement government initiatives aimed at improving security.
In addition, the Benin Traditional Council plans to convene with youth leaders, commonly referred to as Okaighele, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the same location and time.
This initiative underscores the increasing collaboration between traditional institutions and security agencies in addressing the rising incidents of kidnapping and cult-related violence in the region.
