Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria — On Saturday, commercial motorcyclists and tricycle operators in Ado-Ekiti continued their operations despite a police-imposed restriction on movement due to the ongoing governorship election in Ekiti State.
Early reports from the News Agency of Nigeria indicate that by 8 a.m., the scheduled start time for accreditation and voting, several traders in major markets across Ado-Ekiti had opened for business.
Police Commissioner Abayomi Shogunle had announced a restriction on vehicular movement from midnight on Friday until 6 p.m. on Saturday as part of the security measures for the election.
Markets such as Eleyele, Oja Oba Erekesan, and Oja Bisi in the state capital were observed to be active, with electoral activities underway.
Oluwadare Adeleye, a commercial motorcyclist, expressed confidence in the election outcome, believing it would be an easy victory for Governor Biodun Oyebanji. “There was no reason to stay indoors,” he said, viewing the contest as largely uncontested. He noted that security personnel appeared more relaxed and approachable compared to previous elections.
Tricycle operator Moses Ajibade acknowledged the police’s directive but cited economic necessity for his decision to continue working. “I need to provide for my family and fulfill my weekly obligations,” he explained. He initially planned to stop working at 8 a.m. but noticed that the restriction was not being strictly enforced and chose to remain on the road.
Trader Funmilayo Abolade emphasized the urgency of her work. Selling perishable goods such as pepper and vegetables, she stated, “I cannot allow my goods to spoil. That is why I came out to sell.” While aware of the restriction, Abolade felt she had no choice but to continue trading before heading to cast her vote later in the day.
