Abia State Governor Issues Ban on Commercial Motorcycles in Urban Areas
Umuahia, Abia State — Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has enacted a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, commonly referred to as “Okada,” within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.
The ban, announced by the State Commissioner for Information, Okay Kanu, will take effect on Monday, June 22, 2026.
According to the state government, the prohibition is aimed at enhancing security, improving public safety, and promoting better traffic management in these urban centers. The government has instructed all commercial motorcycle operators in the affected areas to cease operations by the stipulated date.
In conjunction with this ban, security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been tasked with ensuring strict adherence to the directive.
Any individual or operator found in violation of the order will be subject to arrest, and the motorcycle involved will be confiscated in accordance with the law.
The Abia government is urging residents, transport operators, community leaders, and the general public to fully cooperate with authorities during the implementation of this directive, which is intended to advance the collective safety and development of the state.
