You didn’t read state police bill very well — Akpabio’s aide fires back at Peter Obi

Mustapha Responds to Obi’s Criticism of State Police Bill

Tijani Mustapha, media aide to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has responded to criticism from Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding the recently passed State Police Bill.

In a post on X on Friday, Mustapha accused Obi of not fully understanding the legislation prior to making his comments. Obi had previously criticized the Senate for hastily passing the bill, asserting that it lacked proper legislative procedure. He raised concerns that the process had heightened public skepticism about potential political motives behind the bill’s introduction.

Obi also highlighted the absence of public hearings in the legislative process, warning that the establishment of a state police force could lead to misuse by state governors to silence political opposition.

Mustapha rebuffed Obi’s claims, asserting that the former governor had not comprehended the bill as enacted. He pointed out that the legislation includes provisions for the creation of an independent State Police Service Commission, directly addressing one of Obi’s primary concerns.

“I know this because his major concern of the creation of an independent State Police Service Commission was duly addressed in the bill,” Mustapha stated, questioning Obi’s understanding of the issue.
