2027: Tinubu, APC will be defeated massively in free, fair contest — Dickson

Senator Seriake Dickson Confident of NDC’s Prospects in 2027 Elections

Senator Seriake Dickson, the national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), voiced optimism regarding the party’s chances in the upcoming 2027 general elections. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he asserted that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would face defeat if the elections are conducted fairly.

Dickson pointed to widespread dissatisfaction with the APC-led government as a significant factor that could lead to electoral loss for the ruling party. “As the leader of the NDC and a Nigerian aware of the sentiments and aspirations of citizens, I believe the APC government will be defeated overwhelmingly,” he stated.

He emphasized the importance of a transparent democratic process and called for an open electoral environment, urging authorities to allow all political parties to participate without interference. “Let every party that wishes to contest do so. You can only defeat them in an electoral contest,” Dickson added.

The former governor of Bayelsa State indicated that the NDC is open to discussions with other opposition parties ahead of the elections but expressed a desire for any coalitions to support the NDC’s candidates. “As an opposition leader, our party will engage in conversations within that space,” he said, while underscoring the quality of the NDC candidates.

Dickson acknowledged that it is premature to predict the results of any coalition negotiations, stating, “We are not claiming superiority. After the nomination process, we will enter another phase of discussions. Whether there will be an agreement remains uncertain, but all options are open.”

His remarks come as opposition parties seek alliances in response to a shifting political landscape, notably involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

Furthermore, Dickson dismissed a legal challenge aimed at deregistering the NDC, labeling it “frivolous” and politically motivated. He expressed confidence that the lawsuit would not hinder the party’s participation in future elections, affirming that all its candidates will appear on the ballot. He reiterated that the NDC complied with all legal requirements during its registration and maintains faith in both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary.

Additionally, Dickson rejected claims against the NDC’s logo, asserting that no entity can claim exclusive ownership of the internationally recognized peace symbol, which has been associated with various global and Nigerian leaders for decades.
