Climate change critical development challenge – Gov Namadi

Governor Highlights Climate Change as Major Challenge in Jigawa State

DUTSE, Nigeria — Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi identified climate change as one of the most pressing development challenges facing the current generation, citing its adverse effects on livelihoods due to desertification, land degradation, and recurrent flooding. He made the remarks Tuesday during the inauguration of the state governance structure for the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge and the launch of environmental societies at tertiary institutions and clubs in schools.

The event was officiated by Hajiya Nana Kashim Shettima, the Second Lady of Nigeria, who represented the First Lady and National Chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Governor Namadi emphasized that Jigawa, located in Nigeria’s semi-arid region and along the Great Green Wall corridor, faces significant environmental challenges. He explained that as a frontline state in the Great Green Wall initiative, Jigawa has endured the consequences of ecological degradation, including diminished arable land and changing environmental conditions that threaten local livelihoods.

“Our communities have suffered the effects of environmental degradation for many years,” Namadi said, adding that despite these adversities, residents remain committed to safeguarding the environment.

He shared that his administration prioritizes environmental sustainability and climate resilience within its development agenda through targeted policies and investments designed to protect ecosystems, enhance livelihoods, and foster sustainable economic growth.

The governor also noted that the newly inaugurated state governance structure for the Green Nigeria Challenge aligns with Jigawa’s development goals and the recently approved Jigawa State Climate Change Policy. He stated that this initiative supports ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability, encourage sustainable agriculture, and ensure responsible resource management.

Namadi underscored the importance of citizen participation, particularly encouraging youth engagement, in the fight against climate change. He praised Senator Tinubu for her timely introduction of the Green Nigeria Challenge, viewing the program as a critical aid for states confronting climate-related issues.

In her address, Hajiya Nana Kashim Shettima lauded the Jigawa State Government for its dedication to environmental protection and climate action. She described the Green Nigeria Challenge as a national campaign designed to mobilize households, schools, and local communities to adopt tree planting initiatives, enhance environmental sanitation, and implement climate-conscious development practices.

Shettima highlighted Jigawa’s strategic position in Nigeria’s climate action efforts due to its susceptibility to desertification. She urged residents to consider planting drought-resistant trees, such as neem, moringa, date palm, mango, and guava.

Additionally, she encouraged Environmental Clubs and Societies throughout the state to advocate for biodiversity conservation and increase environmental awareness in their communities.
