Federal University of Technology, Minna, Implements Security Measures After Student Protests
Minna, Niger State – The Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, has announced a series of security initiatives and plans for a significant expansion of its student accommodations in response to a protest by students on Tuesday regarding ongoing security issues affecting nearby communities.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Faruk Adamu Kuta emphasized during an interview with Capacity Media Trust Radio that the university is collaborating closely with security personnel and local community leaders to address the recent attacks. He reassured students and parents that the campus itself remains secure, with the threats emanating from surrounding areas where many students live.
“Our campus is secure. The issue is with the villages and communities around the campus where many of our students reside,” Kuta stated.
Following a meeting that included Divisional Police Officers from Bosso, Kpakungu, and Gidan Kwano, along with university officials and community representatives, Kuta revealed that a subsequent attack on a private student residence prompted the student protest.
Kuta met with the protesting students and held further discussions with security agencies and community leaders to enhance the university’s security response. He also mentioned the involvement of local vigilante groups to assist the Nigeria Police Force in ensuring safety in the affected areas.
“We have marshalled our strategy, and by the grace of God, with the support of all stakeholders, this will not happen again,” Kuta added.
In addition to these security measures, Kuta announced an expedited construction project aimed at adding approximately 2,000 new bed spaces on campus. He indicated that at least 1,000 of these spaces are expected to be completed by the end of the year. Currently, the university has a little over 5,000 bed spaces and is also working with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) under a Public-Private Partnership to further enhance student housing.
