David Salifu’s murder: No Nigerian is safe until bandits are defeated — Adejoh

Benue Governorship Candidate Condemns Killing of Former SSG

Peter Adejoh, a governorship aspirant representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benue State, has expressed outrage over the recent killing of Professor David Onu Salifu, the former Secretary to the Benue State Government. Adejoh stated that “no Nigerian is safe until bandits are defeated.”

In a statement released on Friday, Adejoh honored Professor Salifu, describing him as an esteemed statesman, a respected scholar, and a dedicated public servant. He emphasized that Salifu’s death is a significant loss for Benue State, the academic community, and Nigeria at large.

Reports indicate that Professor Salifu was killed by suspected bandits on the Wukari-Makurdi road. Adejoh cited this incident as indicative of the deteriorating security situation nationwide.

“The tragic loss of Professor David Salifu highlights the escalating insecurity affecting our highways and communities,” said Adejoh. “It serves as a painful reminder that no Nigerian is safe until bandits and other violent criminal elements are effectively addressed.”

Adejoh recalled Salifu’s distinguished service as Secretary to the Benue State Government under former Governor Gabriel Suswam, noting his integrity and commitment to public service. In academia, Salifu was a Professor of Public Administration and a former Dean at the Federal University, Wukari, where he dedicated decades to teaching and mentoring future leaders.

“Professor Salifu bridged the worlds of scholarship and governance with remarkable excellence,” Adejoh remarked. “His belief in dialogue, sound policy, and peaceful coexistence makes the circumstances of his death all the more tragic.”

He urged the Federal Government to use this incident as a catalyst for reforming the country’s security infrastructure. Adejoh advocated for a shift from reactive measures to proactive intelligence gathering, community-based policing, advanced surveillance technology, and more decisive actions against criminal gangs.

Additionally, Adejoh called for the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Salifu’s death, highlighting that impunity fuels further violence.

“This senseless killing must mark a turning point. We cannot continue to normalize these tragedies or respond only with condolences after the loss of innocent lives,” he stated. “The perpetrators must be pursued and brought to justice.”

Adejoh extended his condolences to Professor Salifu’s family, the Idoma Nation, the Federal University of Wukari, and the government and citizens of Benue State. He expressed hope for the peaceful repose of Salifu’s soul and urged leaders to honor his legacy by striving for a safer Nigeria.
