Nigerian men can’t offer more than money in relationship – Toke Makinwa
Nollywood Star Toke Makinwa Addresses Perceptions of Materialism Among Nigerian Women
Nigerian actress and media personality Toke Makinwa has responded to widespread claims that contemporary Nigerian women prioritize financial gain in relationships.
In a recent episode of the MENtality podcast, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa stated that the notion of transactional relationships is not a modern phenomenon, but rather has existed for centuries.
She contended that the criticisms directed at modern Nigerian women stem from a perceived lack of deeper emotional offerings from men. “From time immemorial, a relationship between a man and a woman has always been transactional, right from the Garden of Eden,” Makinwa said. “The extent to which this occurs today, I would attribute to the men. Sometimes, financial benefits are all men have to offer.”
Makinwa elaborated that some Nigerian men rely primarily on their financial resources to attract partners. “Once a Nigerian man makes money, he starts throwing it at the hottest girls,” she said. She noted that women are often approached with monetary offers rather than genuine interest, suggesting that this dynamic has shaped the behavior of some women.
“Men have offered women the strangest things, which has led me to realize that many believe cash is all they need to show,” she added. “Most girls who are perceived as materialistic today have learned how to make demands from the men in their lives.”
The conversation continues to spark debate on societal expectations and relationship dynamics in Nigeria.
