Nollywood money rituals, witchcraft storylines very unrealistic – Actor Sunny Alli
Nigerian Filmmaker Dismisses Witchcraft and Money Rituals in Nollywood
LAGOS, Nigeria — Sunny Alli, a veteran producer, director, and actor in the Nigerian film industry, has labeled storylines involving witchcraft and money rituals as unrealistic. In a recent interview, Alli expressed his disbelief in these themes and asserted that they would not be included in his scripts.
Alli challenged his colleagues to consider their familiarity with the rituals they portray on-screen. He questioned whether any of them had ever attended a witchcraft meeting to accurately depict costumes or accessories involved. He further inquired humorously if the spirits associated with money rituals had access to a printing press or collaborated with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
“I love making realistic movies,” said Alli, emphasizing his commitment to authenticity in storytelling. He dismissed the notion of witches convening, asking rhetorically, “Who has ever been to their meeting, or knows where they meet? What do they look like?”
He also criticized the idea that spiritual forces could produce wealth. “I don’t believe in money rituals,” he stated. “They say it is the spirit supplying the money. I ask: does the spirit have its own printing machine?”
Alli’s remarks highlight a growing conversation around the depiction of supernatural elements in Nollywood, advocating for a more grounded approach to filmmaking.
