Private healthcare investment deepens as OneHealth by AXA expands specialist services

By Rosemary Iwunze

Lagos, Nigeria — Private healthcare providers in Nigeria are increasing their investments in specialized medical services in response to a growing prevalence of chronic diseases, an aging population, and a rising demand for quality healthcare.

OneHealth by AXA has announced the launch of Geriatric and Optometry clinics at its Medical Centre located in Victoria Island, Lagos. This initiative aims to enhance access to specialized care and underscores the important role of private healthcare in addressing significant service gaps.

Industry experts emphasize the necessity of increased investment in specialized healthcare as Nigeria faces a burgeoning burden of non-communicable diseases. Eye disorders and age-related illnesses are placing additional strain on the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

Wahen Egbe, Chief Business Officer of OneHealth by AXA, noted that the new clinics respond to the evolving healthcare needs of the Nigerian population. “The addition of these clinics reflects the growing demand for specialized medical services that address the changing health needs of individuals at various life stages,” she explained.

According to Egbe, the establishment of the Geriatric Clinic follows rising concerns over the healthcare needs of older adults in Nigeria, particularly with increasing cases of chronic and age-related conditions. The clinic offers a comprehensive approach to the assessment, prevention, diagnosis, and long-term management of ailments typically associated with aging, including hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and cognitive decline.

The Geriatric Clinic aims not only to treat these conditions but also to promote healthy aging by helping seniors maintain independence and improve their quality of life through personalized care plans. The clinic operates every Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In addition, Dr. Jadesola Idowu, Country Manager of OneHealth by AXA, highlighted the introduction of the Optometry Clinic, which seeks to enhance access to preventive eye care and address the increasing prevalence of undiagnosed vision problems. “Many eye conditions develop gradually without noticeable symptoms, making routine eye examinations essential for early diagnosis,” she stated.

The Optometry Clinic provides comprehensive eye examinations, vision screenings, refraction services, and early detection of common eye diseases affecting individuals of all ages. It also offers preventive eye care counseling and occupational vision assessments. The clinic operates Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This expansion is part of OneHealth by AXA’s broader strategy to strengthen integrated healthcare delivery by offering multiple specialized services within a single facility. As a subsidiary of the AXA Group, OneHealth currently provides a range of specialist services, including cardiology, endocrinology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, physiotherapy, ENT, urology, and endoscopy, along with 24-hour ambulance and radiology services to enhance emergency response.

Healthcare analysts assert that sustained private sector investment in specialized care, coupled with robust public-private collaboration, will be vital to improving access to quality healthcare, alleviating pressure on public hospitals, and enhancing health outcomes as the demand for specialized medical services continues to grow across Nigeria.
