First Lady Urges Nigerian Musicians to Aid in Alleviating Poverty

LOKOJA, Nigeria — Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, called on prominent Afrobeat artists, including Davido, Asake, and Burna Boy, to assist the government in addressing poverty during the launch of the National Community Food Basket initiative on Saturday.

Speaking in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, the president’s wife emphasized the importance of giving back to the community. She pointed to the philanthropic efforts of Senegalese-American artist Akon as an example, encouraging Nigerian musicians to establish foundations aimed at supporting the less fortunate.

“The burden on the government is substantial,” Tinubu remarked. “While luxury vehicles like Maybachs and Rolls-Royces are desirable, I urge you to consider the needs of those in poverty.”

Addressing the musicians directly, she stated, “We have many wealthy individuals, but our priorities differ. I appeal to the youth in the entertainment industry—people like Asake, Davido, and Burna Boy—to use your resources to make a difference.”

Tinubu’s remarks come as the government seeks to engage various sectors of society, aiming for broader support in its efforts to combat poverty across Nigeria.
