Two Inmates Reportedly Escape from Jimeta Custodial Centre
YOLA, Nigeria — Two inmates, identified by security sources as politically connected individuals, have reportedly escaped from the Security Custodial Centre in Jimeta. The pair were detained three weeks ago amid a crackdown on suspected political thugs in the Mubi area.
The operation was initiated by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who aimed to dismantle criminal networks linked to political violence during a recent visit to the region. Fintiri expressed a commitment to addressing violence and insecurity and has reportedly reacted with anger to the news of the inmates’ escape.
In response, various security agencies, including the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, have launched a manhunt for the fugitives, based on recommendations from the governor.
The Nigerian Correctional Service has not responded to multiple inquiries regarding the circumstances surrounding the escape. Journalists visiting the state headquarters in Jimeta have been unable to obtain statements from management since news of the escape broke last Thursday.
On that day, state Comptroller Abduljalil Odunlami Ajani was reportedly away on an official inspection tour. The following day, the Deputy Public Relations Officer indicated he did not have the authority to comment on the matter. On Monday, reporters learned that the Comptroller was still unavailable and that the Public Relations Officer was unwell.
