WAFCON: Seven facts to know ahead Nigeria vs Malawi

Nigeria Set to Defend WAFCON Title Against Malawi

Nigeria, a ten-time champion, will begin its defense of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title against tournament debutants Malawi on Tuesday. The match is scheduled for Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.

Both Nigeria and Malawi are in Group C, which also includes Egypt and Zambia.

This matchup marks the first time Nigeria and Malawi will contest each other in the history of WAFCON. It will be Nigeria’s 18th encounter with a tournament debutant. Historically, the Super Falcons have maintained an impressive record against such teams, winning 16 of their previous 17 matches, with only one draw.

The lone match where Nigeria failed to secure a victory against a debutant occurred in 2008, when they played to a scoreless draw against Tunisia in the group stage.

In their encounters with debutants, the Super Falcons have scored a total of 67 goals while conceding just four. Their most recent matches against debuting teams occurred in 2022, where they defeated Botswana 2-0 and Burundi 4-0 during the group stage.

With this game, Malawi will become the 21st different country faced by the Super Falcons in WAFCON history.
